Why is it so hard sometimes to reach for (or make) a healthy snack?

We hear we should eat healthy, nod our heads that it’s a good idea and then go running back to the bag of chips. Why?

Next time you convince yourself that tomorrow would be a better time to start eating healthier, consider yourself part of the Procrastination Association (P.A for short…I’m an active member).

Becoming a member is easy and unrewarding. Getting kicked out of the association feels great but is hard. But I’ve found a way!

Whenever I find myself rationalizing about “starting tomorrow” I read this paragraph from the book The Life of Pi

“A castaway’s worst mistake is to hope too much and do too little. Survival starts by paying attention to what is close at hand and immediate. To look out with idle hope is tantamount to dreaming one’s life away.”

Now if you haven’t read the book (or seen the movie) this is what the main character Pi is thinking while stranded on a lifeboat in the middle of the ocean.

I think it applies to our daily lives. We all become castaway’s when we allow the Procrastination Association to keep us from eating properly, working out, studying,  getting things done or even knowing when to take a break and recharge.

When we say “I’ll start tomorrow”, we suddenly find ourselves on our own lifeboat hoping and waiting to be rescued from a situation we don’t want to face.

Next time you feel trapped by the P.A, think of that paragraph and see if it helps you take a small step forward by doing something about it now.

And if the step you’re looking to take involves eating healthier snacks, I have a recipe for you so you can skip hoping for tomorrow and win today!
